Share links

Share a guide with a link that follows your edits, open to anyone or to the people you choose.

Share links are part of Pro. Pick Share link in a guide's menu, choose who can open it, then Create link: the link is copied for you. Readers need no StepKit and no account to read a public link.

Who can open it

  • Anyone with the link: no sign-in. Search engines never list it.
  • Only people I choose: add their emails. Each person gets the link by email, and signs in to ToolClack (with Google, or with email and password) or with a code sent to their email.
  • Only my team: members of your team, signed in (Team plan).

Expiry and copying

A link can expire after 7, 30 or 90 days, or never. With Allow copying on, readers who have StepKit can copy the guide into their own.

With it off, the page has no copy button, but readers still see every step and screenshot on it: share only what they may read.

When you edit the guide, the link shows the new version. To change who can open it later, pick Who can open it in the Share link menu. Revoke link stops it for everyone at once. Your account page on toolclack.com lists every link you shared. The Owner and the Editors of a team also find every link to its guides and folders under Team links, on the My team page.

Share a whole folder

Share folder, in a folder's menu, gives one link for every guide in it (Pro). The page shows the folder's name and description, then each guide as a chapter in the folder's order, with its own Guide me; One at a time runs from one guide into the next. The link follows the folder: edit a guide, add one or move one out, and the page changes. Who can open it, the expiry and Allow copying work as for a guide; with copying on, readers who have StepKit copy the whole folder into theirs (on the Free plan it has to fit in the 10 guides). In a team folder, the Owner and the Editors can share it.

One folder link holds up to 100 guides and 1500 screenshots. Past that, StepKit says so, and a link that already exists keeps its last version until a few guides move out of the folder.

What readers see

The shared page shows every step, or one at a time, with zoom on the screenshots and a language menu. It carries your branding when you set one.

Readers with StepKit can also follow the guide on the real site: Guide me on the shared page, free (see Guide me on the page).

Embed a guide in another page

Copy embed code, in the Share link menu, copies a piece of HTML that shows the guide inside a page of your site, wiki or help center, one step at a time, with a link to the full guide. It follows your edits like the link. It works for links open to anyone: a page inside another site cannot sign its reader in. Where a tool asks for an address to embed instead of HTML, give it the one inside the code, ending in ?embed=1.

Views

At the top of a link's Share link menu, StepKit shows how many times it was viewed and when last. For a link to people you choose, it shows who viewed it, how many times and when, and who has not opened it yet. Your account page lists the views of every link. Your own visits do not count, and a public or team link records nothing about who reads it.
